Major Life Update

There is quite a bit going on. Some of you know portions of what I am about to share. For others, this may be “news to you”. Very few know the full extent of what has been going on. However, now that everything has been formalized and all necessary persons have been notified it is time to update those who might be interested.

  • Today (Tuesday, February 21, 2023) is my last day to be a United Methodist.
After much prayer and discernment, I have determined that God is calling me to end my time in the United Methodist Church. This denomination has been my spiritual home for over 30 years, and while I know some may not understand, it has been a difficult and painful process for me to come to this decision. However, I have peace in my heart that I am making the right decision.
  • Tomorrow (Wednesday, February 22, 2023) I will be an ordained clergyperson in the Global Methodist Church.
My season of prayer and discernment has also confirmed that God is leading me to be part of this new and thriving movement of God’s people. I am a passionate follower of Jesus Christ, I am Wesleyan to my core, and I believe in connexionalism. I believe that the Global Methodist Church will help me to live out these understandings of my faith and will be a solid home for me to continue my call to ministry. Our Mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ who worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly.
  • My new appointment (beginning Wednesday, February 22, 2023) will be as the Executive Pastor of Decatur Methodist Church.*
Decatur Methodist Church is a new church start here in Decatur, Alabama. This is a church of faithful believers who are following the leading of the Holy Spirit to build a church that trusts in the authority of scripture, follows the Lordship of Jesus Christ, believes in Christian community, and has a heart to be about God’s Kingdom work. The people here are excited about what God is doing in their midst and I am honored to serve them as they live into God’s call upon their lives. I am serving with Lead Pastor Rev. Jack Lovelace, who is a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and has shepherded this congregation since its beginning. Exciting things are happening here, and I hope to share more about it very soon.
*It should be noted that Decatur Methodist has not aligned themselves with any association, network, or denomination. That decision is still in process, however, the Global Methodist Church in this phase of its development is allowing pastors to be appointed to independent churches so that we can serve communities who need pastoral support and leadership.
  • I am currently a student at Wesley Biblical Seminary completing my Master of Divinity and fulfilling a few things necessary to be an ordained Elder in the Global Methodist Church.
God opened this door for me to return to seminary last year and I can tell you that it has been a transformative experience. At first, it began as just an opportunity to take some free classes and expand my knowledge of scripture. However, since that time it has become an important part of my spiritual development. I feel that I have grown as a pastor and student of scripture through this opportunity. I can tell you that Wesley Biblical is a strong academic institution with a commitment to developing trusted leaders for faithful churches. I hope to have my degree completed within the next few years.

Please pray for me and my family as we begin these new adventures. We believe that we are being faithful to God and are following his lead. We trust that he will continue to be faithful to us and continue to guide our steps as we enter this next season of ministry.

  3. Thank you Toby for being faithfully and for Glorifying God in Word and Deed as you mentored many during your appointments. Jeremiah 29:11 God is Good…you and Ragan will continue in Glenn and my prayers as we will enjoy again sharing in God’s love together in a new expression of our faith.
